New Video: How PET Kegs Optimize Beer, Wine, Cider, Cold Brew Coffee Logistics and Sustainability

PET kegs are changing how beverage manufacturers think about draft packaging. A disposable PET keg combines the convenience of one-way packaging with the familiar handling of a keg system, making it an efficient option for producers of:

  • Beer
  • Wine
  • Soft drinks
  • Cider
  • Kombucha

Today’s draft market rewards flexibility. For many producers, especially those working with long-distance distribution, return logistics can be expensive, complicated, and unpredictable. In such cases, PET kegs offer a practical alternative to traditional metal kegs, helping companies simplify operations and reduce the cost connected with returns, washing, storage, and maintenance.

If you are looking for a packaging format that can support growth, seasonal demand, or new distribution routes, PET kegs can be a valuable solution to consider. See new PET Technologies video to discover more about PET Kegs!

Main types of PET Kegs

If you decide to go with PET kegs, it is important to understand their main types and configurations:

  • Typical volumes: PET kegs are most commonly produced in 30 L and 20 L formats, with 30 L being the standard choice for draft beverage distribution.
  • Fitting options: To ensure compatibility with existing filling and dispensing equipment, PET kegs are available with standard fitting types, including A, G, D, and S, depending on regional requirements and your distribution market.

Why choose PET kegs?

One of the main advantages of PET kegs is their low weight. A typical 30 L PET keg with fitting and tube can weigh around 545 g, while a 30 L metal keg may weigh around 9.5 kg empty. This means that during transportation, the truck carries more beverage and less packaging.

For beverage producers, this can directly influence logistics costs, especially when shipping over long distances or to markets where returning empty kegs is not efficient. PET kegs also help reduce the need for large storage areas, because there is no need to keep empty returnable kegs waiting for collection, washing, or repair.

Another major advantage is the one-way concept. Disposable PET kegs do not require:

  • return shipping
  • washing systems
  • cleaning chemicals
  • wastewater treatment
  • keg maintenance

This can make operations simpler and more predictable, especially for companies that want to expand into new markets without building a complex returnable keg system.

PET kegs can also support product protection. A passive barrier helps limit oxygen entry and CO₂ loss, while the brown PET body provides UV protection. With the correct production, filling, and handling process, PET kegs can help preserve beverage quality during distribution and storage.

For many producers, PET kegs are also attractive because they are recyclable. When collected and handled correctly after use, PET packaging can enter recycling streams, supporting a more sustainable approach to one-way beverage packaging.

PET keg production process

In the new PET Technologies video, you can see the complete process of PET keg production, from the preform to the keg prepared for filling and transportation.

The process starts with the PET keg preform, which is produced on an injection molding machine. The fitting elements are also manufactured separately on injection equipment and then assembled into a complete fitting system.

After that, the preform is heated and blown into the final keg shape on a blow molding machine. The next stage is sealing and capping, which is performed on a separate machine. At this stage, the fitting is installed into the keg, the container is sealed, pressurized with gas, and prepared for further filling with the beverage.

This production chain shows how a PET keg can move from separate components to a finished packaging solution ready for beverage production and delivery.

PET Technologies solutions for PET keg production

For PET keg production, PET Technologies clients use two main blow molding solutions:

UPF-30 semi-automatic blow molding machine – productivity of around 70 kegs per hour

APF-30 automatic blow molding machine – productivity versions of 120, 250, or 400 kegs per hour, depending on the configuration

These solutions allow beverage producers to choose the production model that best matches their required output, investment plans, and future market development.

A practical solution for growing beverage markets

PET kegs are a strong choice for beverage manufacturers like you, that want to reduce logistics complexity and make draft beverage distribution more flexible. Their lightweight one-way design helps simplify transportation, lowers dependence on return systems, and makes them suitable for different beverage categories.

If you are considering PET kegs for your production, it is important to evaluate the full process: from packaging format and filling method to storage, handling, and production equipment.
